Should the Eagles make a bold move by signing Saquon Barkley?

While the running back market has not been the same for quite some time now, the Eagles are showing interest in a running back that was once labeled as a generational player. Saquon Barkley has not been tagged by the Giants and is set to be one of the top free agents on the market. While the price may scare some teams and fans away, I believe the Eagles should strongly consider this union.

Barkley has been one of the top backs in the league when healthy. He’s made things happen behind an offensive line that has been abysmal over the years. The Eagles on the other hand need a big-time playmaker out of the backfield that could be a true game changer. With D’Andre Swift hitting free agency, you would have to wonder if the Eagles truly do have Barkley in their crosshairs.

In his last 43 games, Barkley has put up good numbers when on the field. He’s tallied 2,867 rushing yards with 18 touchdowns while averaging 4 yards per carry. While many would like to point to his injuries as a problem, Barkley has only missed 7 games during those three seasons. Now imagine him being the Eagles’ stout offensive line that loves to run block more than anything else.

The Eagles don’t need a play like Saquon Barkley but if they truly want to catapult themselves back to the top of the NFC then they should strongly consider the idea of it. The former Penn State product can help right the ship for a team that’s loaded with talent.

This move would also give the Eagles another threat in the passing game as Barkley’s talents as a receiving back are just as good as Swifts. The only issue would be the team’s offensive staff remembering to incorporate Barkley as much as possible.

Can the Eagles afford him?

While many fear the price tag of Barkley, the Eagles are in the best position they’ve ever been in regarding cap space. Philadelphia has found a way to free up about $44 million in cap space which puts them in prime position to make some big moves this offseason.

Saquon’s current market value would put the Eagles in the range of paying him nearly $10 million a year on a 3-year, $29 million contract according to spotrac.com. You would use Barkley during the prime years of his career and with the way Howie structured his contracts, the Eagles can set up some flexible options for the team.

This move would alleviate the burden of carrying the offense for Jalen Hurts. It could also trigger him to start checking down when nothing is opening up down the field. While many would be opposed to this idea, the Eagles are the one team that could pull this off to benefit both sides. And if I’m being honest, I strongly believe that the Eagles are the best landing spot for Saquon Barkley.
