Should the Eagles look to sign Jordan Poyer after the Bills released him?

The Philadelphia Eagles have a need at Safety and one of the premier defenders over the last decade has just been made available. Should they be interested?

With free agency now just few days away, several teams have started making decisions on the players who are currently set to hit the open market. The Buffalo Bills informed veteran safety, Jordan Poyer, that they intend to let him go this offseason. This should be a decision that sparks interest from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Who is Jordan Poyer?

Jordan Poyer started his career with the Eagles. He was a seventh-round pick back in 2013, but was released during October of that season. It would be a decision that later haunted the Birds, with Poyer eventually finding a home in Buffalo and developing into an All-Pro Safety after a launchpad stint in Cleveland.

Poyer is now 32-years-old but is coming off of a strong 2023 campaign. He put up 101 tackles, 4 passes defensed, and a sack & forced fumble. He had a PFF grade of 73 last season and leaves Buffalo as one of their most decorated Safeties in team history.

Should the Eagles have interest in Jordan Poyer?

The Eagles clearly have a need at Safety. The team informed Kevin Byard of his impending release not too long ago, leaving only Reed Blankenship and Sydney Brown as starters at the position. Brown was a rookie last year and will miss the opening stint of 2024 due to the rehabbing of a torn ACL he suffered at the end of last season.

Jordan Poyer’s presence in the defensive backfield would not only provide the Birds with some much-needed leadership, but he’d likely be available on a cheap deal due to his age. The Eagles only need a stop-gap at the position knowing that Sydney Brown flashed plenty of promise during his rookie campaign, and the idea of drafting another young Safety to develop behind Poyer is certainly an enticing one.

He had a pretty cheap base salary last year of just $2.2M and cost the team $4.97M in cap space. The Eagles have close to $40M available and should comfortably be able to give their former draft pick a one/two-year deal worth around $6/$7M.

It’s only fitting that Poyer ends his career with the team he started it with, and if he wants to play for a Super Bowl contender, the Eagles should still be among the favorites in the NFC to make the Super Bowl next season.

This feels like a perfect scenario for the Eagles to strike, but will Howie Roseman view it the same way?
