The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Friday that outfielder Brandon Marsh underwent surgery on his left knee. The team estimates that he will be sidelined for multiple weeks.
“Phillies OF Brandon Marsh underwent successful left knee arthroscopic debridement surgery with Dr. Steven Cohen in Philadelphia this morning,” the team announcement on Twitter/X reads. “It is anticipated that he will return to playing in 3 to 4 weeks and be ready to play by opening day.”

Marsh’s surgery occurred 10 days before the Phillies’ first full-team workout for Spring Training. Should he be able to follow the initial timeline for a return, he will still have several weeks of Spring Training games to ramp up for the 2024 season.
The Phillies’ outfield depth will be pushed further in Marsh’s absence. Assuming the team plans to keep Kyle Schwarber in a semi-permanent spot as a designated hitter, the team will rely on Nick Castellanos, Johan Rojas, Jake Cave, and Cristian Pache to man the outfield while Marsh recovers.
Marsh dealt with a left knee injury in August of last season, missing 12 games but playing the rest of the Phillies’ season after making two rehab appearances with the Triple-A Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs. Over 133 games in his first full season with Philadelphia in 2023, the 26-year-old made appearances in all three outfield spots (mostly in center field) and posted an OPS of .829 with 112 hits, 60 RBI and 59 walks.
The Phillies will begin Spring Training games on Saturday, February 24 with a matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays. They will host the Atlanta Braves for Opening Day on Thursday, March 28.
