There is an image of a jersey making its way around Twitter of the potential City Connect jersey for the Phillies. Is it real? Is it a cheap knock-off that will have no resemblance to what we’ll see released? Either way, it’s very interesting and has raised plenty of debates online.
Potential Phillies’ City Connect jersey goes viral
The jersey is dark blue on the sleeves and bottom half while the chest gradients into a bright blue with the edges a bright yellow. The chest says “PHILLY” in a new font. This pays homage to the city of Philadelphia as the city flag is blue and yellow. The Phillies are amongst the last teams to get a City Connect jersey. The Phillies, Mets, Cardinals, and Blue Jays will be the final four teams getting a City Connect uniform.
With the Phillies finally getting their new uniform, they do have to get rid of the red jerseys, fondly referred to as the “getaway day” jersey that they wear for the last away game of a series. That means they’re going back to wearing the road grays full-time.
Initial thoughts
If real, they are significantly better than I anticipated them to be. When it was revealed that they would be going with the city flag colors, panic ensued. Blue and Yellow isn’t typically a well-received color combination, look at Boston’s for example. A great meaning for the city, but it doesn’t look good. The jersey reminds me of the Philadelphia Union kit, but that thought is to be expected because they are the only team in the city that wears the flag colors. The font could be better, but overall I grade the look a 7/10.
Other City Connect jerseys
The first round of City Connect uniforms was in 2021. The Diamondbacks, Red Sox, Cubs, White Sox, Dodgers, Marlins, and Giants were the teams that received them. They are all unique to their city and represent the fanbases well. The Yankees, Rays, Guardians, Tigers, and Athletics are the only teams without a City Connect jersey.
