Eagles injury report: 5 players miss practice on Wednesday, but help might be on the way

The Philadelphia Eagles have released their first injury report ahead of this week’s clash against the San Francisco 49ers. The gauntlet has been a beatable one for the Birds, with victories over the Bills, Chiefs, Dolphins, and Cowboys propelling them to NFC East supremacy. However, the injury report suggests they could be short-staffed when facing San Fran.

Dallas Goedert could be nearing a return

The opening half of the season was hardly kind to the Philadelphia Eagles, and after things settled down going into the Bye, a predictably tough couple of games have taken their toll on Sirianni’s team.

Dallas Goedert and Grant Calcaterra both missed practice on Wednesday, however, Goedert will “push to play” this week against the San Francisco 49ers, according to NFL Network’s James Palmer.

The original prognosis called for surgery and put Goedert on the shelf for at least four weeks. Well, 22 days later, Goedert appears ready for a return and the timing couldn’t be better. The Eagles-49ers showdown at Lincoln Financial Field is a potential NFC Championship Game preview, arguably the biggest litmus test to date.

The defense suffers some setbacks

Fletcher Cox and Zach Cunningham both missed practice on Wednesday, which could be problematic for Sean Desai’s defense. Cox is dealing with a groin injury and will likely be questionable for Sunday’s matchup, but his presence would be missed if he is forced to miss time. However, if Milton Williams clears concussion protocol, his loss would be somewhat negated by a young,er and more explosive defensive tackle who is finding form at the right time.

Cunningham’s absence would be worth noting. He’s amassed 47 tackles in 11 games for the Eagles this season and has been come a pivotal cog in Desai’s defense alongside Nicholas Morrow.

The team did bring in Darius Leonard earlier today to take a look at the former Colts linebacker. He’s set to reportedly make his decision between the Eagles and Cowboys over the weekend. While the veteran has dealt with some huge injury concerns over the last 24 months, his experience and ability could be invaluable if the Eagles sustain even minor blows at linebacker.

Eagles players limited on Wednesday

Elsewhere, a lot of players were limited today including both DeVonta Smith and A.J Brown. Lane Johnson was understandably limited after missing the win over Buffalo, but is said to be day-to-day after undergoing an MRI on Monday.

D’Andre Swift was also designated with that label having aggravated his ankle.

There are no real reasons to be concerned about these players just yet, but there is certainly a reason to monitor them.
