Reigning MVP and Philadelphia 76ers superstar Joel Embiid has been named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for Week 3. After leading the Sixers to an undefeated record through four games last week, Embiid certainly earned the honor though there were many, including his own teammate Tyrese Maxey, who were deserving of a place in the conversation.
Complete and utter domination by Joel Embiid
With impressive averages of 36.3 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.0 assists, and 2.0 blocks, Embiid not only performed well, he dominated the competition, asserting himself on both ends of the court. Ranking second in the league in scoring, seventh in rebounds, and seventh in blocks, he has made a statement that the player the NBA saw last year is not only real but that he’s yet to reach his ceiling as well.
So far this season, Joel Embiid has somehow taken a step forward from his MVP campaign from last season, a ridiculous thought, and yet the evident truth.
This marks the 12th time that Embiid has earned the honor, which is the second-most in franchise history, only trailing Allen Iverson (20). Embiid still has some way to go before he catches up to the answer, but with the way he’s been playing, the record is certainly within his grasp.
The Sixers are now an NBA-best 8-1 on the season and their star center is no small part of that equation. While the rise of Tyrese Maxey has been a key cog, as has the arrival of Nick Nurse and several role players, the Sixers start and end with 21. This should simply be the first of several accolades Embiid sees this season.
