The Phillies survived the opening game of what is now a crucial series against the Atlanta Braves. A 1-0 win thanks to a lone J.T Realmuto run could end up being incredibly important when all is said and done, for both teams. With that said, this game could be even more important.
Atlanta is now 1.5 games back from the Mets in the race for the NL East, while Philadelphia are now two games clear of the Brewers in an intense dash for wild card spots. With less than 15 games remaining for all clubs, the pressure is beginning to ramp.
Phillies vs Braves Pitching matchup
Jake Odorizzi (5-5, 4.04 ERA) vs Aaron Nola (9-12, 3.38 ERA)
If this matchup feels familiar, it’s because it happened last week. Aaron Nola was beaten by Odorizzi in a 4-3 game. Nola was shelled for 7 hits through as many innings in one of those blips in the road that seems to be happening a little too often for such a prized pitcher.
With that said, it’s tricky to beat the same pitcher twice in a week, let alone when you’re now in his backyard. The advantage seems to be with Nola and the Phils here.
Betting information & picks for Phillies vs Braves
The Phillies are understandably favorites tonight with Nola at the mound, but that’s not the only reason to be optimistic. Despite their recent slump, the Phils are 5-1 in their last 6 home games, while Atlanta is 11-21 as an underdog, and 8-15 as an underdog on the road.
If tonight is anything like last night and we see an offensive stalemate, the better arm is going to win. That arm is Aaron Nola.
