As the Ben Simmons trade whirlwind continues to grow, swallowing up new names such as James Harden, Sixers fans are left wondering which players could even be packaged with the controversial Aussie in the first place. In short, there’s no easy answer, but the man arguably most likely to be moved would also debatably bring the toughest goodbye – Seth Curry.
The other candidates to potentially sweeten the deal are simply too prized or not sweet enough. Tyrese Maxey should be untouchable and Matisse Thybulle continues to be one of the most efficient yet overlooked defensive pieces in the league. Seth Curry, meanwhile, is cheap, cheerful, and enjoying a career year, but nobody will want him to leave.
During his final season with the Mavericks, Seth Curry averaged 12 points per game, was shooting under 43% from the field, and a lowly 33$ from beyond the arc.

Since arriving in Philadelphia, Curry’s career has reached new heights. He’s now averaging 15.3 PPG, shooting a whopping 49.1% from the field and 40.6% from beyond the arc. He now boasts a career three-point percentage of 43.8%, which is the fourth-best in NBA history
Curry’s presence has not only added a dynamic on the wing only really rivaled by that of J.J Reddick in recent years but it’s given Joel Embiid a sniper who he can rely on when it comes to pick-and-rolls. His presence takes some much-needed attention away from Embiid and allows the offense to work in multiple ways. In this year especially, that factor alone has been incredibly value to a team missing one of its cornerstones.
Cury is only making $8.2M this season and that number barely moves in 2023. You’re talking about a veteran who is having a career year, has a cheap short-term deal, and can mentor younger players. His value has never been, and never will be higher.
The Sixers will have to choose between their head and heart when it comes to deciding upon the future of Seth Curry. Can they still get consistent production from the wing without him? Is it a smart business move? What will his departure mean for locker room morale?
The Ben Simmons saga has gone on way too long and his value is now minimal. But is it really worth parting ways with such a key component purely to rid yourself of an itch? Sure, the contract hurts, but the Sixers have survived without Simmons and will continue to do so. They shouldn’t have to pay a premium just to get rid of him.
Much like Mark Cuban, Daryl Morey would be left haunted by the absence of Seth Curry if he is indeed moved in a trade.
