The 2021 SheBelieves Cup is over, and the USWNT conquer once again! The USA won all three of their matches. Brazil finished in second place after, Canada in third, and Argentina in the last place. Let’s take a look back at how the USWNT was able to hoist their fourth SheBelieves Cup.
USWNT Conquer their opposition
The US Women’s National Team won the 2021 SheBelieves Cup by conquering the opposition. The USWNT didn’t concede any goals and scored nine goals themselves across the three matches. Each match they pushed the intensity, that ramped up to hoisting the trophy.
In this tournament USWNT coach, Vlatko Andonovski utilized many of the players on the roster. This tournament was of course important, but it was also an assessment of the players that could feature in the upcoming summer Olympics.
This tournament definitely helped with that, as the players that would not normally be starting were given opportunities. They shined enough to get three wins and not concede a goal. However, it was clear that the USWNT was not playing their best soccer in this tournament.
Winning while not playing the best
This SheBelieves tournament win is definitely impressive when you look at the score lines. But if you watched the individual matches, you would see that this was not the cleanest bit of play. In two of the three matches, the USWNT had issues converting their chances.
It’s not uncommon for the USWNT to have slow starts to their years. The SheBelieves Cup is always the first real competitive game they play, so it’s okay if things are a bit shaky. However, this time around things were different due to the roster rotation.
Amidst these early year issues, and roster rotation. This team that is still the best in the world was able to beat competitive teams all while not being at their best. This is what championship teams are made of, which is why they have dominated all competitions for the past eight years! Specifically, this will pay major dividends later this summer for this amazing team.
Next up the Olympics
The next major competition the USWNT will play in will be the Tokyo Olympics this summer. The tournament will kick off on July, 21. The USA will be the top-ranked team heading into it and will see fellow SheBelieves contests Brazil and Canada there.
Between then and now, there will be more friendlies to help set that roster. Could we see up-and-comers get their chance on the world stage, or will the time-tested veterans get another chance to win?
The field for that tournament is still being set, but it is another thing to look forward to for this truly amazing team that continues to win everything. If this SheBelieves Cup was any indication, the next generation of USWNT will carry the torch of this golden generation.
