Capping off a week of training camp in preparation for opening night, the Philadelphia Flyers televise an important intrasquad exhibition.
Tonight is the calm before the storm, one last chance to make an impression before the season begins. Without a preseason, the Philadelphia Flyers intrasquad exhibition showcases the players who are fit for participation in training camp. For some players, it’s a return to the ice. For many others, it’s the final audition to make the Flyers roster and taxi squad.
Flyers’ Intrasquad Rosters
Team Orange will carry one more defenseman and one less forward than Team White. Goaltenders split between the two. One player who is not featured on either roster, but is fit to play, is Roddy Ross. Ross was at camp all week, so the idea that he doesn’t receive playing time could mean that Alex Lyon and Felix Sandstrom are the two goaltenders playing for a taxi squad spot. The WHL did announce two days ago their plans to play a 2020-2021 season, which Ross could participate with the Regina Pats.
Team Orange
Forwards: Andreoff, Konecny, Hayes, Couturier, Lindblom, Giroux, Morin, Wisdom, Twarynski, Farabee
Defensemen: Bigras, Provorov, Pouliot, Zamula, Friedman, Braun, Wylie
Goaltenders: Lyon, Elliott
Team White
Forwards: Raffl, Patrick, Laughton, van Riemsdyk, Sandin, Frost, Foerster, Aube-Kubel, Willman, Bunnaman, Voracek
Defensemen: Myers, Sanheim, Hagg, Wotherspoon, Prosser, Gustafsson
Goaltenders: Sandstrom, Hart
Opportunity is knocking for some Flyers
Three players on Team Orange receive an extended look on the powerplay’s second unit. After an impressive camp from the rookie, Zayde Wisdom found his way on the second team with Derrick Pouliot and Egor Zamula. It’s a nod to Wisdom from Alain Vigneault, commending him on his performance this week.
Zamula and Pouliot are two that are worth observation. Heading into camp, Zamula was a dark horse candidate to make Philadelphia’s taxi squad. He could still do that since Shayne Gostisbehere is unfit to play tonight. Pouliot, a former eighth-overall draft pick from 2012, was added by Chuck Fletcher in the 2020 offseason. Perhaps Pouliot is making a run for a taxi squad spot, competing against Zamula.
Grabbing the brass ring is what Samuel Morin is looking to do. His performance and usage tonight may land a taxi squad spot. Morin has battled through adversity, and his grit is evidence of how badly he wants to be on the Flyers. During camp, Morin has shown value. The experiment from Vigneault and Ian Laperriere could act as a solution to the lack of physicality from the forwards.
