The Phillies take 3/4 from the Blue Jays, set themselves up perfectly for a playoff position.
After all the drama and all the chaos that has been the 2020 Phillies this season, the team is finally approaching the final stretch, and they have set themselves up to be in a playoff position. Despite losing series to both the Miami Marlins and the New York Mets, the team rebounded massively this past weekend.
Despite having to battle through a “bullpen game” and a Vince Velasquez start, the Phillies escaped with three massive victories. This puts them a game back over .500, and in firm position of one of the NL’s Wildcard spots.
The Phillies took the first two games of the series via a double-header, riding some seriously strong pitching in the first half of the afternoon. RHP Zach Eflin cruised through several scoreless innings, striking out nine en route to a 7-0 victory. The team saw some less than ideal pitching in the second double-header due to it being a “bullpen game”, but the team battled back with some late offense to eventually secure the 8-7 win.
Game three of the series was the most surprising of the weekend, as Vince Velasquez somehow managed to pitch six innings of one-run ball. McCutchen, Haseley, and Knapp all drove in runs, and the Phillies walked out with a 3-1 victory.
Game four on Sunday wasn’t the cleanest of outings, as the Phillies fell by a score of 6-3, but there were some genuine positives to take away from the outing. Rookie Adonis Medina looked decent in his debut, and the loss was nothing compared to that of what the Eagles put the city of Philadelphia through Sunday afternoon.
Recapping the four-game series while also taking a look ahead to the Nationals series is Philly Sports Network‘s own Philadelphia Phillies podcast, the “Bullpen Blues”. Hosted by David Esser and Kevin Dickson, they take you through everything you need to know from this weekend’s Phillies action.
