The Phillies announced that they will be retiring the late great Roy Halladay’s number #34. he Phillies announced in a statement issued today on the Phillies.com website:
“On Friday, May 29, 2020, fans are invited to join the Phillies as they officially retire No. 34 on Roy Halladay Number Retirement Night at Citizens Bank Park prior to that evening’s 7:05 p.m. game against the Nationals. All fans that night will receive a Roy Halladay Retired Number Statue presented by Valley Forge & Montco Tourism.
The special event will take place on the 10th anniversary of Roy Halladay’s perfect game. The 20th in Major League Baseball history. Special guests will be in attendance to honor the beloved ‘Doc.'”
Halladay pitched for the Phillies from 2010 through 2013. During his stint as a Phillies pitcher, he threw a perfect game and a no-hitter. The no-hitter came in his first-ever postseason start. As a Phillie, Halladay sported a 55-29 record with a 3.25 ERA. In 2010 he was 21-10 with a 2.44 ERA and won the NL Cy Young Award and was a two-time all-star. Halladay retired after the 2013 season which was cut short due to injuries. He was posthumously inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2019.
May 29th is now officially Doc Halladay Day in Philadelphia.
