The Phillies have a reunion on there hands as Joel Sherman reports that the Phillies are in agreement with free agent shortstop Didi Gregorius.
The report states that Gregorius is headed to Philadelphia on a 1-year deal. This will bring Didi Gregorius back under the guidance of manager Joe Girardi. The duo were together in the Bronx from 2015-2017.
The deal will be 1-year $14 million. Phillies’ own Jim Salisbury broke the monetary amount.
Under Joe Girardi, Gregorius slashed .276/.313/.432. Didi was brought in New York under immense pressure as the replacement for retiring Derek Jeter.
He now heads to Phillies to bridge the gap until 3rd base prospect Alec Bohm is ready. He’ll likely play shortstop as Jean Segura moves to 2nd base and Swiss Army Man Scott Kingery fills in at 3rd base.
Gregorius probably only signed a 1-year deal to reestablish himself after having a down season coming off injury. After coming back from Tommy John surgery, he only hit .238. The Phillies will be hoping that it’s a comeback year for the former Yankee shortstop.
Didi Gregorius is the second big signing for the Phillies this offseason. Earlier, they signed former Met Zach Wheeler for 5 years $118 million.
The Phillies still will look for another starting pitcher and hopefully some bullpen help.
Fans should enjoy Didi on Twitter and expect a lot of emoji nicknames for every Phillies player.
He does that after every game fyi.
