Let’s go Flyers… and the fans are yelling from the top of their lungs! It’s happening, it’s happening, the Flyers are back in town…the Flyers are back in town! It’s like I’m singing Thin Lizzy’s hit song, “The Boys are Back in Town.” C’mon hockey, let’s start already! Without further delay, here are our answers to your questions.
Chuck Fletcher won’t make a panic trade until at least the trade deadline if indeed they are not playing good hockey by then. The Flyers are used to slow starts in years past, so this season shall be no different. Ideally, if the orange and black finish at .500, or a few games above .500 at the end of October, then it’s a win. This way they are not behind the eight-ball early in the year. For the past few seasons, the Flyers have had to play catch-up for the entire season, hopefully, this year they can write a new script.
Fortunately, the Flyers have young budding prospects to keep the cap down to a minimal cost. The orange and black currently have the seventh-best farm system in the league, according to Corey Pronman of The Athletic. This could help their cap in a big way. Currently, the Flyers have four high priced contracts in Claude Giroux, Kevin Hayes, James Van Riemsdyk, and Jakub Voracek. Moreover, the Flyers are in a position to possibly lose a big contract at the expansion draft, as well. However, the reality is they won’t be able to keep everybody. In the event Fletcher cannot keep a high valued player, to include a prospect, the possibility of the trade then becomes imminent.
Jakub Voracek- “Shooooooot”
Claude Giroux- “Grilled Cheese”
Bobby Brink- “The Hammer”
Samuel Ersson- “Yung Lean”
Sean Couturier- “Coots”
Travis Konecny- “Born to be Wild”
Carter Hart- “Our Savior”
Nolan Patrick- “Rockstar.” Patrick would sing Lionel Richie’s hit song, “All night long,” a lot last season.
The Flyers will have to win a playoff round, in order for media members in the NHL to view them as an up-and-coming team that could make some noise. As of right now, the Flyers have been a fringe playoff team for the past few seasons. Honestly, that’s not good enough to garner some respect, as there are a lot of teams in the NHL that are fringe playoff teams. If the Flyers win a playoff round this year. They could realistically become contenders next season, thus they should start garnering some respect from the media in the NHL.
