The Eagles went out of their way to bring in the most experienced backup quarterback possible this week, with the signing of Josh McCown coming just days after Cody Kessler suffered a concussion on Thursday night. McCown had previously retired from Football, but put that on hold for one last ride and a chance at an elusive Super Bowl ring.
While 16 years of experience, a winning record, and a positive TD/INT ratio all sound great, the Eagles have also relit a fire that was burning during Alshon Jeffery’s rookie year.
McCown was thrown into action that year as the Bears quarterback, instantly connecting with the wide receiver whom he called moments after he was drafted by the team. In the year that followed (2013), McCown would start five games, throwing 11 touchdowns. 4 of those, along with 561 yards, were to #17 in week 12-16, the most important period of the season.
In total, McCown targeted Jeffery 59 times. He caught 39 of those for 648 yards and a 16.6 yards per catch average. The two developed a bond off the field too.
So in his first media huddle as an Eagle, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that someone was a little excited.
McCown even took jersey number 18 so he can sit next to Jeffery in the team photo. Hopefully, McCown won’t be called into action this season, but in the event he is, at least he already has his favorite jump-ball receiver onside.
If you had trouble getting over Bobi and Tobi, #McJeffers is the substitute bromance for you to stan.
