Lane Johnson’s 10-game suspension left a hole on the 53-man roster, a hole that has now officially been filled by former NDSU cornerback C.J Smith.

C.J Smith, a former College teammate of Carson Wentz had a brilliant preseason, leading his team in tackles against the Colts and coming down with a clutch interception against the Buccaneers. Smith was able to separate himself from the likes of JaCorey Shepherd and Denzel Rice to earn himself a spot on the practice squad after a very crowded battle but was eventually waived by the Eagles in the hope that he would clear waivers.
Smith was one of the most impressive cornerbacks on the roster through preseason and could be in line for his first few regular season snaps depending on the severity of McKelvin’s injury.
The move also opens up a corresponding spot on the practice squad. TE Anthony Denham fills that role after being waived by the Texans. Despite the Texans having a huge need at Tight End coming into this season, Denham was unable to earn himself a spot on the final 53-man roster but had an encouraging offseason. The 6’4 ,former Utah TE went undrafted in 2014 but landed in Houston and stayed their until just over a month ago when he wais waived.
