Today Philadelphia Eagles Safety Malcolm Jenkins signed a new five-year deal, seeing him remain in Philadelphia through 2020. Jenkins enjoyed a career season and a Pro-Bowl nod and whilst a new contract is completely deserving considering he was set to enter his final year..it was always going to come at a price.
#Eagles S Malcolm Jenkins signed a 4-year extension worth $35M, source said. $21M in guarantees. Was to make $5.5M this year, now makes $10M

With his 4-year, $35M extension, #Eagles have Malcolm Jenkins under contract for 5 years at $40.5M. Their priority was clear.

Up until this point, the off-season moves have actually lifted some of the cap pressure off of the Eagles shoulders, for a season at least. With Jenkins, the hit for 2016 is again lower. He was previously set to make $7.1m and is now going to make $5.6m in what is a very team friendly deal. The team have actually created $1.5m of cap space for 2016 with the new contract.
So, how does this impact the bigger picture? Well the highly speculated monster deal that would see Fletcher Cox retained for five years seems slightly more plausible and as for Sam Bradford…well, it can’t exactly hurt. We will delve into this properly once the final cap figure is confirmed (as it’s set to rise).
It’s a big statement from the Eagles and as NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport states, it’s clear to see what direction the Eagles want to move in. By tying down the big playmakers who still have a very high ceiling, the Eagles are building the foundations of which Pederson can build upon.
