With the Eagles recently extending the contract it got us thinking, who should the birds attempt to tie down next?
For us, there’s one name that stands out from the rest..and that man is Defensive End Vinny Curry. Why? Let us explain..
Firstly there’s the progression in terms of numbers. Here are some key stats since he joined the team in 2012.
Tackles Sacks
2012- 9 0
2013- 22 4
2014- 9 9
The progression that can be seen is almost vertical if you were to plot it on a graph. Not only that but those nine sacks were recorded whilst he played in just 32% of defensive snaps. If Curry has another season of nine sacks or more then it’s almost imperative that the team sign him.
Then there’s versatility. If there’s one thing that Chip looks for in players, it’s the ability to play in more than one role. Curry was initially drafted as a 4-3 defensive end before moving to a 3-4 defensive end and now to add to his seemingly endless skill-set, training as a 3-4 outside linebacker. The situational pass rusher is perhaps one of the most versatile on the roster and with a severe lack of depth at OLB, if he can perform well in both roles then not only will his stats sky rocket..but so might his contract.
Curry is young and Chip is trying to build for the future. By letting go of the deadwood and bringing in youthful talents who have had varying setbacks, he has paved the way for an entirely new Defense. Signing Curry to a long term deal would not only stop him picking up some money in free-agency but also sign a player who wants to be there. Curry has been a birds fan for as long as he can remember, making the connection between the team and fans that much deeper. Curry is a phenomenal pass rusher and it’s rare to see him slow off the mark. With the likes of Barwin already having their future in Philly whilst Fletcher Cox should get the same privilege without a second thought, tying Curry down would not only give the Eagles one of the most intimidating pass rushing units in the game..but one of the most versatile. One minute Curry is lining up as a DE, the next he’s at linebacker alongside Kiko Alonso…that’s a scary yet incredibly exciting thought.
It would not be a bad move to sign Curry to a long term deal now, but if he can prove to be effective in both positions..then it’s going to bode very well for a huge deal next season. If Curry has an explosive season then he’s going to be a hugely touted product next year…it’s down to Chip Kelly to determine if one of the last remaining Andy Reid Era players is worth the investment now…or later.
