After weeks of speculation, the Union finally did the thing..no not sign another keeper, but bring in Swiss winger Tranquillo Barnetta using allocation funds.
The 30-year old midfielder who has played for his country in three world cups is set to sign for the Union following extended training periods with the team. His other options came in the form of Premier League side Leicester City amongst Real Betis and others.
Barnetta started 22 times for Schalke 04 last season and continued to show his speed and intuitive play on the left hand side of the field. The great thing about the deal is that he won’t count as a Designated Player.
It’s possibly the most exciting signing the Union have made in a long, long time. With Wenger and Le Toux struggling this season and the only other real option coming in the form of the impressive rookie Ayuk, it was clear the Union needed one more winger if not for anything more than depth should an injury occur such as Wenger’s recent concussion. Barnetta and Ayuk attacking the flanks could well be a sight we could get used to in coming seasons.
