With the Phillies already struggling in terms of catching depth and Tommy Joseph out with a concussion, a huge window of opportunity has opened up for the backstops in the Minor League affiliates. It’s an opportunity that Gabriel Lino has taken by the horns as he earns promotion to the Iron Pigs.
Gabriel Lino, (who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles along with Kyle Simon in a trade for Jim Thome three years ago) has spent the year with the Phillies Double-A affiliate Reading, with a hitting record of .266 and picking up nine doubles, three homers and 13 RBI’s in just over a hundred at bats. But despite his impressive record offensively, that’s not the reason the Phillies have called Lino up to Triple-A.
Last season, Lino managed to throw out 42 percent of base stealers and is already at the 48% this season! Defensively, the 22 year old has shone. In his last 10 games with Reading, Lino,is on a .333 batting scoring four runs, seven RBI’s, a homer, three walks and the same number of strikeouts. Not bad huh? The question is, when will we see him in a Phillies jersey?
