Pitching matchup

Zack Wheeler (10-6, 3.62 ERA) vs Michael Wacha (11-2, 2.85 ERA)

Happy Wheelsday. Zack Wheeler’s 2023 campaign has been a stellar one and has only gotten better. Wheeler has allowed 3 or fewer runs in 5 of his last 6 games. Over his last 11 (since July) he maintains a 3.31 ERA which is simply outstanding. While the weather will be hot and favor batters, Wheeler might indeed be hotter, which is just as well given how good the San Diego offense has been this series.

Across from Wheeler is Michael Wacha, who is also having a huge year. His 2.85 ERA is impressive, but his 2.70 ERA over his last 5 is even more so. He’s struck out 5+ batters in each of those starts, which could give us some upside when looking at the strikeouts prop. But however you view it, the run count points towards being low today.

Phillies vs Padres Betting preview

From a Phillies perspective, throwing up a dud last night wasn’t on the cards. The Padres scored 8 runs and Philadelphia registered just 3 hits all game. I would expect some kind of bounceback here, but Whcha won’t make it easy.

For me, the OVER is the play here. It only missed by one yesterday and the Padres put up all 8 runs. This is a very strong pitching matchup, but both offenses could put up 4 runs and this line would cover. I think the Phils bounce back and the Padres regress a little batting against Wheeler. You could parlay the Phils to win AND the OVER, but I’m playing it safe here with the over alone.

From a prop perspective, Michael Wacha’s strikeouts line is 4.5. He’s struck out 5+ in each of his last 5 starts. I don’t mind flirting with that total going over today.

As for Phils props, Trea Turner is out on paternity leave and the rest of the team will need to step up. Nick Castellanos hasn’t homered since August’s win over the Cardinals. This is a prime spot for some Castellanos magic and at +400 to hit a home-run, I’m all for it.
