Australia vs England: Women’s World Cup Analysis

England

The idea of playing in a Semi-Final with homefield advantage isn’t something all too alien to England, who won the most recent European Championships on home soil. Australia will be hoping to one-up that accomplishment, beating the Champs on their own turf and advancing to the 2023 Women’s World Cup Final.

England go into the game as favorites, but will do so without Lauren James, who received a suspension for stamping on Michelle Alozie. The Red Card received in the quarter-final means that England will be behind the 8 ball on Wednesday. She had 3 assists this tournament, her absence will be a big one.

Ella Toone will be the woman tasked with stepping up in place of the suspended James. The Manchester United starlet scored 10 goals in 10 games during the qualifying process but is yet to find the net this tournament. She’s +400 to score against Australia.

Australia

England has hardly been the championship-winning side we’ve come to know. They were not at their best against Nigeria nor Colombia, but the strength of their squad has been enough to lift them pass both opponents. If Sam Kerr returns from injury to the Matilda’s in time for this matchup, it could spell trouble for the Lionesses.

Australia ranks 8th in Shots on Goal this tournament, 7th in crosses, and 13th in possession. They haven’t been the most electric team when in possession, but the return of Sam Kerr, who had 7 goals and 2 assists in the AFC Women’s Aisa’s cup last year, would certainly change things. She’s +260 to score anytime against England with the home fans roaring behind her. If Kerr returns, we could see a much more dynamic Aussie side.

Australia vs England: Best prop bets

It’s hard to look past Alessia Russo, who has scored twice in the 2023 Women’s World Cup. She is the favorite to score in this game at +260 (tied with Kerr), but Lauren Hemp could be a great pivot at +300. She’s had 6 shots on target and 7 off, finding the net twice in 5 games. She’s arguably just as likely to score as Russo.

From an Aussie perspective, it’s hard not to back Kerr to score if she’s healthy. The proof is in the pudding and she’s arguably the most talented player on the field.

Australia vs England: Head-to-head

The two teams have played each other four times, with England winning 2, the Aussies winning 2, and the pair drawing the last.

Australia vs England: Women’s World Cup picks

As much as the home nation will have momentum on their side, England is slowly coming into form. The Lionesses are still not as dominant as they were in the EURO’s, but the resilience shown when having to fight through added time with only 10 players on the pitch was beyond impressive. If they can even play even 20% better than they have in their last two matches, they should win this.

My picks:
England to win 2-1 +760
Both teams to score +115
England to win +130
Lauren Hemp to score +300
Sam Kerr to score +260
