The Philadelphia Phillies were able to win their second game in a row against the Marlins last night, which could be crucial when all is said and done given how tight the wildcard race looks to be. With one game left in the series, the Phils will be hoping Zack Wheeler can put a bow on what has been a great gift to the team.

Pitching matchup

Zack Wheeler (8-5, 3.74 ERA) vs Braxton Garrett (5-3, 4.08 ERA)

The expected starters for this matchup are Zack Wheeler and Braxton Garrett, although, there is a chance we see the recently signed Michael Lorenzen, and Johnny Cueto take the mound respectively. If we see the former, then it will be a chance for Wheeler to continue his hot run of form. He’s only allowed 2 runs over his last 2 appearances, striking out 19 in the process. In fact, he’s recorded 7+ strikeouts in each of his last 4 matchups.

As for Garrett, his shaky month of July settled with a big game against the Tigers where he allowed only 1 run. He only averages around 5 innings per matchup, however, which means that we could see a bullpen effort in the second stanza. The Marlins bullpen is allowing over 4 runs per game, so this could play into the hands of Philadelphia.

Phillies vs Marlins Betting preview

Our Alec Bohm bet did cash last night although our TOTAL didn’t. However, I think we will see a rise in runs scored. If Wheeler/Garrett do end up giving way to a debutant and Johnny Cueto, the line for his matchup could well be closer to 9. I don’t mind sprinkling some powder on the OVER.

The Phillies have also won 8 of their last 9 games and Zack Wheeler is red-hot again. I have no problem backing the Phils at this price against a Marlins team that is 24-30 as an underdog. Philadelphia is 40-28 as a favorite.
