The venue for the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Detroit Golf Club could play host to another Birdie fest. Tony Finau won the event last year with a score of -26 and was pushed by Cam Young who finished at -21. Much like we saw last week,Detroit is a tree-lined course that features very little in the way of risks for big-hitters to be aware of.

There are four par 5’s on this par 72 and 10 par 4’s. A lot of these holes are absolutely gettable for the big boys, and naturally, GIR will be a huge stat to watch this week. If you really want to focus on stats to look at, anything on the green will be a great place to start as this course does little to separate anyone from tee to green. The Big hitters will likely dictate the scoring pace, and finesse won’t matter if someone is chipping on for a birdie chance when par 4’s are being driven in one.

We see a three-way tie at the top of the odds sheet this week. Tony Finau has only missed one cut this season but has yet to really peak in the way we saw him shine last year. This is a course very-much suited to his skill set as we saw when he won the Rocket Mortgage Classic in 2022 and there is every chance he wins it again.

Rickie Fowler feels like he’s destined to win on tour this year. His resurgence has been met with adoration from fans who have loved seeing him in the thick of the action frequently in 2023 and is riding a streak of 5 top-20 finishes. Could this be the week that Fowler finally claims another tour win?

Colin Morikawa is the under-the-radar name here, which says a lot. An injury has kept the phenom out of the winners circle this season, but he’s rallied to some really impressive finishes in recent weeks. With reason to believe that the best is yet to come, it’s always better to be early on a name this popular.

One of the fun names to keep an eye on will be Justin Thomas. JT has had a disappointing season in 2023 but had a huge resurgence last week and that might be exactly what the Doctor ordered. It’s rare for a player of Justin’s caliber to be priced this high, so grabbing him now might be a wise decision.

Longshots at the Rocket Mortgage Classic

Davis Riley could be a really intriguing play here at +9000. His putting is a concern but he does seem to have broken the curse of missed cuts. We’re not expecting a win here, but this course fits his big-hitting ability well and he could be a fun play at such high odds.

If you want course history, look no further than Troy Merritt. Prior to last year’s T14, he had back-to-back top-10’s at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. At +25000, it’s absolutely worth a punt. A top-10 finish is priced HIGHER than a win for one of the big boys. It’s worth a punt.
