The Philadelphia Phillies were disappointingly swept by the New York Mets and but there’s no time to lick wounds. They’re back on the road to visit Bryce Harper’s old team, the Washington Nationals. Can they finally get back on track?

Pitching matchup

Zack Wheeler (4-4, 3.60 ERA) vs Josiah Gray (4-5, 2.77 ERA)

Both pitchers come into this contest needing to prove their salt. The Phils’ rotation has some serious question marks over it, although Wheeler isn’t one of them. He posted his best outing of the year in his most recent starts, stunting the Braves in a shutout win.

Wheeler pitched a season-high 8 innings that day and given the issues elsewhere in the bullpen, the Phillies might need him to put up a similar effort today. He’s more than capable of doing so, but will that be enough when the pitcher opposite him is just as talented?

Speaking of Josiah Gray, he gave up 2 runs and 4 hits against the Royals in his last start and has done a good job of keeping a sporadic Phillies offense quiet. He’s kept Bryson Stott hitless, and only given up 5 hits combined against Nick Castellanos, Brandon Marsh, and Bryce Harper (per Action Network). If there is ever a spot to play the UNDER, it might just be here.

Phillies vs Nationals Betting preview

The Phillies sit 4th in the NL East after a disappointing opening 50 games of the season. They’re riding a four-game losing streak and have struggled massively on the road at 11-21.

What’s interesting is that despite the struggles and upcoming pitching matchup, the Phils do hold an advantage. For whatever reason, the Nats are just 2-7 when playing after a day off and only 9-17 as a home underdog.

If you’re looking for an outright bet, betting on the Phillies moneyline might be the way to go.

The run total sitting at 9 is also intriguing given the caliber of starting pitchers in this matchup. The Phillies have scored 9 runs in their last 4 games combined and they’re likely going to struggle against Gray. Parlaying the UNDER and a Phillies win could be a profitable way to bet this game.
