Pitching matchup
Taijuan Walker ( 12-5, 3.49 ERA in 2022) vs Nestor Cortes (12-4, 2.49 ERA in 2022)
The Phillies are winless through their opening three games having been swept by the Rangers. It was assumed that the Fightin’s would miss Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins, but nobody expected all firepower to just magically vanish. Coming off of a Sunday Night Baseball clash in Texas, they now have to fly to New York to face the Yankees just hours later.
New York has started the season 2-1 and has looked every bit as dangerous as 2022 suggested. Aaron Judge is 6-for-13 through 2 games and the offense made light work of the Giants. The Yankees finished 2nd in the league when it came to runs scored last year, averaging over 5 per game and that trend has seamlessly continued here.
Cortes is not a pitcher to be messed with. He was 6-1 at home last year and if there is ever someone to really smother an offense, it’s Nestor Cortes. Solving him will be a tough issue for the Phillies, but they have all the pieces to do so. Trea Turner had a .298 average in 2022. J.T Realmuto and Alec Bohm were both over .275. We know this offense can pack a punch if it can just get rolling. Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s the biggest concern.
Rob Thomson made some questionable calls as it pertained to the bullpen last night and that’s where this game will ultimately be decided, which feels all too familiar. It’s all well and good if Walker can keep things tight, but if there’s too much indecision from the manager when making bullpen choices, it can sting.

Betting preview
Backing any team coming off of Sunday Night Football when playing on the road feels risky. It’s a long flight to New York, another road game, and the Yankees are firing on all cylinders. The Phils may find signs of life offensively, but I think the Yankees have the edge here.
Betting pick: New York Yankees (-175)
