The Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs are set to battle in Arizona for the right to be crowned champions of the NFL.

There are storylines galore heading into the contest. Andy Reid against the team he helped build, the Kelce Bowl, and a matchup of MVP finalists.

But there’s one major comparison between the current Eagles roster to their previous Super Bowl team. In 2017, the upstart Eagles faced the best quarterback in football at the time (Tom Brady) and a top coach in Bill Belichick.

In fact, when looking at the current 2022-23 Chiefs roster and the 2017 Patriots roster, the similarities are endless.

The Defense

New England had two key players on their defense in 2017. Stephon Gilmore, and James Harrison were the two best players for the Patriots on the defensive side. Everyone else on the defense was made up of upstart young defensive talents.

Similarly to the Chiefs with Chris Jones and Justin Reid, Kansas City has a very underrated unit. Even how both defenses played in their conference title games is similar.

In 2017, the Patriots suffocated their opponent in Jacksonville and made key defensive stops that led to the win. The Chiefs were able to knock off Joe Burrow when it mattered most for their win.

Both defenses the Eagles have and will face in two weeks are filled with great, underrated players.

Positional Breakdown

The Chiefs’ three best players on the roster are Patrick Mahomes, Chris Jones, and Travis Kelce. But if you position by position, the Eagles seem to have the edge at every position outside of quarterback and tight end.

It’s the same thing that happened in 2017. Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski were the lone positions where the Patriots had an edge and they used both all throughout the game.

Kansas City has a slight edge at those two same positions but an argument can be made that the Eagles’ other position groups have the edge.

Will the Eagles be able to exploit their matchup advantages against one of the best coaching staffs in NFL history? We have two weeks to find out.
