England vs Wales

The USMNT were able to take full advantage of a sloppy England side earlier this week, and, as a result, Wales now have a chance to qualify for the group stage. A win against the Three Lions is neccesary, but is it plausible?

England vs Wales betting preview

England should theoretically come into this game roaring on all cylinders. A disappointing performance against USA saw conservative play punished by a high-pressing side that were hungry for points. Wales will provide a very similar challenge. Their World Cup fate hangs in the balance and while the loss to Iran was similarly underwhelming, it’s all on the line here. England can probably get away with a draw and qualify, even if that would be seen as a let-down, they’d be through. It’s a must-win for Wales and they should be smelling blood in the water.

Wales need to beat England by a 4-goal margin unless the Iran and USA game ends in a draw. This should see Wales really look to push on and score early, which could see a similar strategy to the one that the US deployed. England lack pace at the back and players like Gareth Bale are crafty enough to get long balls in behind and really put Jordan Pickford under pressure.

But realistically, Wales have dropped 4 of their last 6 in all competitions and Kyle Walker may well get his first taste of World Cup 2022 action, which would at least solve the pace issues at the back. Given that this isn’t a must-win, Gareth Southgate may well decide to rotate his squad a little, finally giving players like Phil Foden the minutes they deserve. He’s by far the team’s most creative player, and bringing Jordan Henderson on instead of the City player last time out was a decision that was largely dismissed by the English fans.

We’ve seen two very different England sides play in this 2022 FIFA World Cup. The one that dismantled Iran and the one that looked clueless against the US. It’s down to Gareth Southgate to find the middle ground and ensure that England go through to the knockout stage with some level of momentum.

England vs Wales betting pick

This is truly unpredictable. It’s a rivalry game by every stretch of the imagination and there’s a lot on the line for Wales. I’d like to think Wales get at least one of the four goals they ideally need, but England should comfortably win the matchup.
