Colts vs Steelers betting preview

The Indianapolis Colts fell just short of the mark against the Eagles last week and now face a 3-7 Steelers team who look destined to finish the season with a losing record for the first time during Mike Tomlin’s 16-year tenure. A win against the Colts might at least give Pittsburgh some hope, but is it on the cards

Colts vs Steelers betting preview

It appears as if both teams seem to be finally bottoming out. The Colts were able to push former offensive coordinator, Nick Sirianni, to his limit last week, while the Steelers were able to largely keep pace with Cincy, putting up a season-high 30 points in a loss to an exploding Bengals offense that now has 70+ points over its last two games combined.

Kenny Pickett appears to gradually be finding his footing in the NFL. He hasn’t thrown a pick in two games, looked solid against the Saints and a little more comfortable against the Bengals. It’s easy to forget he’s only started 6 games and while he isn’t slinging it downfield to create scoring opportunities just yet, he appears to be a little more confident finding open passes over the middle. It’s worth noting that his average depth of target against the Bengals was a season-high 9.9 yards, which is much, much better. He now faces a Colts defense that ranks 4th in yards allowed per game. If there’s ever a unit that’s going to challenge him, this is it.

It’s a different story on the other side of the ball. Pittsburgh’s defense ranks 28th in the NFL, 24th in sacks per game, and this in spite of ranking 2nd in defnesive turnovers per game. They stomached some huge injury setbacks this year, but still rank 5th against the run. This is huge with Jonathan Taylor coming to town. If they can force Matt Ryan to throw deep, just like the Eagles did, then they’ll at least be able to give Kenny Pickett and the offense a chance.

This is a young Steelers team that is coming of age rapidly. But is the defense going to be able to stop two electric Indy wideouts and account for Jonathan Taylor’s rampant rushing ability?

Colts vs Steelers betting pick

The Colts are ushering in a new era under Jeff Saturday and although they arguably tossed away a very winnable game against the Eagles, the progress was clearly visible. Matt Ryan is now far less damaging to his team, that defense is still very good, and they have one of the league’s best running backs at their disposal. When all is said and done, I don’t think the Steelers are quite ready to beat a defense that strong just yet.

Pick: Colts -2.5
