The youthful USMNT taking on an England team that looks poised to make another deep run into the knockout stages. This will definitely be a grading scale for the US, but can they grind out some points?

England punched 6 past Iran but what really shocked people is Harry Kane didn’t find the back of the net. There were 5 different scorers in the opening game and that has to be a massive concern for any team who previously thought taking away Harry Kane would marginalize England. Kane was much more effective in holding up the ball and threading passes for his teammates than we’ve previously seen on the international stage, and with wonderkids like Saka and Bellingham getting a confidence boost early on, the US will have to do more than just play tight to stop Kane finding space in the box.

For the US, it’s going to be a game of counter-attacking. They won’t be able to dominate possession as they did against Wales, but that may work to their advantage. Their lone goal in that contest came from a surging Christian Pulisic run and England has become synonymous with a high-pressing back four that may lack pace on the wings. Sure, they could start Trent Alexander-Arnold, but he doesn’t have the same defensive ability as Trippier. This may give the US a gameplan to work with, it all comes down to how long they can put up with being bombarded by that star-studded midfield.

England is a big step up over Wales and the USA struggled to close that one out. The average age of the USMNT is 23.8 years old and that level of inexperience against a core that has largely gone unchanged since their World Cup Semi Final in Russia may haunt them here.
