Uruguay vs South Korea

One of the quieter matchups tomorrow sees Uruguay take on South Korea in Group H. There’s no doubting that following a bumpy few years, Uruguay is more vulnerable than they have been in recent years and that could open the doors for another shock result.

Uruguay vs South Korea betting preview

Luis Suarez still heads up the Uruguay national team, but there’s a lot of instability surrounding it. The team fired its Head Coach after a 15-year-run but this could be exactly what they needed to buck some disappointing trends. With talents like Darwin Nunez and Ronald Araujo poised to make an impact on the big stage, a fresh way of coaching could be the catalyst for change. Uruguay won all of their final 4 qualifying games, but a lack of familiarity with the team may lead to frequent changes as the best-XI is evaluated.

The main talking point here from a South Korean standpoint is the fact that they go into this matchup likely lacking its central star, despite his best efforts. Son Heung-min fractured his eye socket in a Champions League match and as a result, will miss this World Cup. It’s heartbreaking to see, as Son is a truly elite-level talent that could turn the tide of battle.

Without Son, it is hard to see how South Korea will keep pace with Uruguay. They did hold up really well in their qualifying games, conceding just 3 in 10, per SportsMole,, but this is a very different opponent on a very different stage. And if there is no way for South Korea to really dent the opposition, a 1-0 or 2-0 win could be on the cards for Uruguay.

Uruguay vs South Korea betting pick

I hinted at my pick in the last paragraph, but I really like betting the under 2.5 goals here. Uruguay may lack cohesion and play down to their opposition, instead deciding to experiment with numerous substitutions to see what works ahead of their more difficult games. Mix in the likely absence of Son and Hwang Hee-Chan and I think this has under 2.5 written all over it.
