Germany vs Japan betting preview

Germany is one of the most successful nations in World Cup history, with 4 trophies in its cabinet. Their last World Cup trophy came in 2014 and despite making four of the last five semi-finals, they shockingly crashed out of the group stages in 2018 and will be looking to make up some lost ground.

On the surface, they are a stout defensive team. With the versatile Joshua Kimmich, and game-breaking Antonio Rudiger, there should be plenty of muscle at the back. But they’ve only been able to keep 2 clean sheets in 2022 so far and drew 3 games in their Nations League campaign. On the attacking front, they scored the second-most goals of any team during the qualification process, so they’re certainly not lacking.

That doesn’t really give a huge advantage to Japan. This group is packed with talent. Both Spain and Costa Rica join them in Group E, making every game extremely important. They’ve only won a single game of their last 8 World Cup contests and they’ll have their work cut out trying to buck that trend on Wednesday.

Japan’s main hopes rest on the shoulders of former Liverpool man, Minamino, who scored 10 goals during the qualifiers. But will he be able to counter-punch the German attack? That’s where the well of hope may begin to run dry.

Thomas Muller is now joined by 19-year-old wonderkid Jamal Musiala up front and we haven’t even mentioned the electric Leroy Sane or Kai Havertz who can cause some real problems for opposing defenses.

Realistically, Japan likely won’t be able to handle the quality Germany has from top-to-bottom.

Germany vs Japan betting pick

Germany are clear favorites here and with good reason. While it may be tempting to back Japan for another underdog win, I think the smart money will be on Germany. If you did want to juice the odds, Germany -1.5 is priced at +125, which is very appealing.
