France vs Australia

France vs Australia is one of Tuesday’s marque World Cup matchups. The defending champs will be taking on the Aussies in a repeat of the 2018 World Cup group opener. France were victorious on that day, but will things be any different this time around?

France vs Australia betting preview

France might be the defending champions, but defending their World Cup crown isn’t going to be easy. Having already lost Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, it was revealed recently that Christopher Nkunku and Karim Benzema will also miss the tournament. That’s a lot of firepower to leave on the sidelines and if there was ever a time for Kylian Mbappe to rise from the ashes and prove he really does belong in the same conversation as the very, very best, this is it.

Mbappe has 43 goals and 14 assists through 57 international games and should still get plenty of chances to show his attacking prowess, with both Olivier Giroud and Antoine Girezmann likely starting alongside him as they did four years ago.

The good news for France is that they should still have enough quality to get past the group stage, if not, then at least Australia. The Aussies have only won 2 of a possible 16 World Cup games in their history and their chances here of adding a third against France look bleak.

The Socceroos have won 5 of their last 6 in all competitions, however, and despite dealing with some injury struggles of their own, may well taste blood in the water and a chance to cause a real upset.

France vs Australia betting pick

France are clearly the better side here, but Australia held them to a 2-1 defeat last time out and now France have been decimated with injuries. Because of this, I think a case can be made for a healthy punt on Australia +1.5 (+100)
