The Philadelphia Phillies have stormed out to a 2-1 series lead in the World Series following yesterday’s win. Aaron Nola will now take the mound this evening in a bid to give the Phils a 3-1 lead and move them one step closer to a World Series win.

Ranger Suarez was electric last night in ‘the start that should never have been’ and made the most of his unexpected opportunity. Now, the Phillies turn to their beloved Aaron Nola for game 4.

Pitching matchup

Aaron Nola (11-3, 3.25 ERA) vs. Christian Javier (11-9, 2.54 ERA)

Aaron Nola will make his fourth start of the postseason tonight, taking the baton from Ranger Suarez after a beautifully pitched game 3. Nola is 2-1 in the postseason with a 4.57 ERA, but he has somewhat struggled as of late.

The Astros punched in 5 runs in 4 innings against him in game 1 before the Phils rallied back to win 6-5 on the road, and his previous start saw the Padres thump a further 6 runs in another 4 innings of work. It’s a stark contrast to his starts against the Cardinals and Braves, where he allowed a total of 0 runs through 2 starts.

So which Aaron Nola are we going to see tonight? That’s kind of been the question all year. But let’s not forget the type of season Nola had. In 205 innings, Nola had a 3.25 ERA, led the NL in BB/9 (1.3), and led all of baseball in SO/W (8.10). He did things that haven’t been done in a century.

If he can get close to his best tonight, the Phils will be in very good hands against Christian Javier.

Javier decimated the Yankees in his most recent start and performed really well this season. The 25-year-old will also be making his first start in the Fall Classic, but did appear in 3 games as a reliever last year. Javier has never pitched against the Phillies before and if there was ever a way to set the tone, it was by sending 5 balls out of the park en-route to a demolition-job victory last night.

Betting preview

The Astros need this win. If they are able to tie the series up, they get to choose between Justin Verlander and Framber Valdez for game 5. If not, things get murky and everything will be Sunny in Philadelphia.

The Phils really heated up last night and proved that on their turf, there are very few teams that can hang this postseason. Not the Padres, not the Cardinals, not the Nationals, and not the Astros. Another confident performance at the plate from a Phillies team riding the hometown wave should be enough to seal the deal, but it’s not going to be easy against a team who know they need this win.

I’m still backing the Phillies tonight. The homefield advantage at Citizens Bank is real and the atmosphere will be extremely intense for a young pitcher making his first World Series start. At least for Aaron Nola, he has a sold-out stadium behind him and all the offensive support in the world.
