Before World Series game 3, JT Realmuto added some gold to his shelf at home. For the second time in his career, Realmuto has won the Rawlings Gold Glove award for catcher in the National League.
The Best Catcher in Baseball retains his title
Realmuto first won the award in 2019. His defensive prowess that season created the BCIB nickname for Realmuto. That season he led the league in the percentage of runners caught stealing at 47%. He recorded 1.7 dWAR and 12 defensive runs saved.
2022 was another fantastic fielding season for the Phillies’ backstop.
He caught 44% of all would-be base stealers. He added to his total dWAR, recording 2.1 dWAR. He also recorded 11 DRS.
Realmuto had a .993 fielding percentage, committing 8 errors in 133 games at catcher.
J.T Realmuto is back on top
The Best Catcher in Baseball lived up to his name on both sides of the ball. At the plate, he slashed .276/.342/.478 with 22 homers and 84 RBI. His 129 OPS+ was the highest of his entire career. So far in the postseason, he’s had a .815 OPS.
The other 2 finalists were Tomas Nido of the New York Mets and Travis d’Arnaud of the Atlanta Braves.
Brandon Marsh was also a finalist for a Gold Glove award for left field in the American League. He played 77 games there for the Angels but didn’t play there once as a Phillie. Marsh has been the Phillies’ everyday centerfielder. He lost out to the Cleveland Guardians’ Steven Kwan.
