There hasn’t been a general manager who has had a better start to the 2022-23 season than the Eagles very own, Howie Roseman.
Shrewd trades before the season coupled with key free-agent signings helped Philadelphia get to a quick 6-0 start. It wouldn’t have been shocking if the Eagles decided to stay still at the deadline and run the table with the current group of players.
Of course, that’s not how Howie Roseman operates.
Eagles won’t settle
Under a week before the trade deadline, the Eagles sent a fourth round pick to the Chicago Bears for pass rusher Robert Quinn. After a career high 18.5 sacks last season, Quinn has recorded just one sack this year but is among the tops in the league in double-teams faced on the season. He has seen 58 double-teams in just this season.
Quinn originally was signed to Chicago for five years, $70 million deal just two years ago. With a cap hit of over $7 million before the trade, it would be difficult to see how the Eagles could manage to cut a deal out.
But the shrewdness of Howie Roseman ended up changing the dynamic of the trade. Instead of the Eagles having to find cap room to keep a player like Quinn on the roster, Chicago now owes the rest of the contract this season to Quinn.
Executive of the year?
To summarize, the Eagles sent a fourth round pick for a key role player with excellent production and experience, for what amounts to be pennies on the dollar. It’s an incredible job to bolster a defense full of talent and experience.
Howie Roseman might win executive of the year based on the work he did before this trade, but the Quinn trade is another example of highway robbery for an Eagles general manager that has a long history moves like this.
