The Philadelphia Phillies are back in action this afternoon after dropping Saturday’s matchup against the Giants 5-4. They’ll be looking to avoid a sweep today, and a failure to do so would mark the first time that the Phils have been swept since a series against the Cubs.

The Phillies have now dropped five of their last six and are slumping somewhat. The lone win was that 18-run demolition job to avoid a sweep last week, so maybe the chase for Red October can ignite another explosive performance in a similar circumstance here.

The defense last time out was especially sloppy and the errors were only compounded by yet another poor outing from Thor. However, with Ranger Suarez at the mound today, we should at least see an improvement in one of those areas.

As for the Giants, they dropped seven in a row before flying out of the gate against Philadelphia. They’ll be riding the waves of confidence and momentum going into today’s matchup and that’s something that Philadelphia will have to extinguish, not just from a pride standpoint, but knowing the wildcard implications with a little over 30 games left in the regular season.

Pitching matchup

Ranger Suarez (8-5, 3.42 ERA) vs Carlos Rodon (12-7, 3.03 ERA)

As previously noted, it will be Ranger Suarez starting for the Phillies today. He was really strong through the month of August outside of a poor 3 innings against Arizona where he surrendered 6 runs. Against the Giants, Suarez is 1-0 with an ERA of 2.25 and 11 strikeouts through 5 appearances.

Rodon will be no slouch on the opposing side of the mound, however. Like Suarez, his last outing of August was a disappointing one as he gave up 5 runs against the Padres. But he’s been electric outside of that.

This pitching matchup really favors the under here from a betting perspective and that’s where we will be looking to bet on this matchup.

Phillies vs Giants Betting preview

I like the Phillies to avoid the sweep here. The pitching matchup should keep run totals low and if there is ever an offense that can keep knocking on the door until they force a run through, it’s this one. Parlaying the Phils and the under could be a strategy if you want to boost the odds, and both selections should prove to at least give you the edge.
