The Philadelphia Phillies have had quite the odd season. They started incredibly slow under former Joe Girardi but seem to have found their footing under interim manager Rob Thomson. The team has suffered injuries to two of their top offensive weapons, and yet, they remain on track for a playoff spot this season. This is thanks to the effort of players like Kyle Schwarber, Zack Wheeler, and Rhys Hoskins.
While these players have certainly proven valuable to their team, how are they perceived with regard to the end-of-season awards? Could Kyle Schwarber (leads NL in home runs) have a shot at MVP? Could Aaron Nola make a push for the Cy Young award between now and the end of the season? And where does the rest of the team rank in these award races?
Philadelphia Phillies’ NL MVP Award Odds
- Kyle Schwarber +2500 (tied 7th)
- Bryce Harper +10000 (tied 15th)
- Rhys Hoskins +12500 (tied 17th)
- J.T. Realmuto +25000 (tied 26th)
- Nick Castellanos +2500 (tied 26th)
For a time, it seemed as though Philadelphia Phillies’ star Bryce Harper had a chance to repeat as NL MVP despite his torn UCL. Since his thumb was fractured facing Blake Snell, however, his odds have dipped significantly (likely unrecoverably as well) as he has been out since June 26th and will be for at least another month or two.
In his place, however, Kyle Schwarber has flown up the MVP award board after an incredible month of June that appears to still be going on for Schwarber. Since June 1st, Schwarber has hit 16 home runs and driven in a total of 33 RBIs while contributing 32 runs. The average (.224) is the clear weakness holding back from true contention, but if he continues to rake as he has over the past month-plus, he could solidify his case as a legitimate MVP candidate.
Philadelphia Phillies’ NL Cy Young Award Odds
- Zack Wheeler +1800 (6th)
- Aaron Nola +3000 (8th)
- Kyle Gibson +15000 (tied 33rd)
- Ranger Suarez +25000 (tied 38th)
The Cy Young race is a bit less exciting for the Philadelphia Phillies at the moment as the race has been dominated by the top two candidates (Sandy Alcántara and Corbin Burnes), but the odds actually favor a CY winner in Philadelphia over an MVP, at least for now. Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola have put together solid seasons for the Philadelphia Phillies so far, but to contend for the Cy Young, they will need to take their game to the next level. Something both pitchers have done in the past.
There is still much baseball left to be played this season for the Philadelphia Phillies, and both pitchers appear to be trending in the right direction. In his last five starts, Zack Wheeler boats a record of 3-1 with an ERA of 1.76 and 32 strikeouts. Aaron Nola, meanwhile, has a record of 4-2 in his last 10 starts with an ERA of 2.78, 73 strikeouts, and only eight walks.
With the season only halfway over, Wheeler and Nola have a lot of work to do, but they’ll also need a steady collapse from the likes of Sandy Alcántara, Corbin Burnes, and more to truly have a chance.
