Eagles lose the Robert Saleh sweepstakes – what happens next?

Despite bringing in former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh for an interview yesterday, the Eagles can officially cross him off of their target list. Saleh has officially signed a five-year deal with the New York Jets.

This comes as a blow to Philadelphia, who clearly seem to be targeting a defensive mind to replace Doug Pederson, at least in the early goings. Saleh was easily the most experienced and accomplished candidate available and would’ve fit the culture of Philadelphia perfectly.

The remaining candidates

As of right now, here’s a list of the candidates who have been linked with the position:

Titans OC Arthur Smith – Interview requested – taken place on Thursday (?)
Cowboys OC Kellen Moore – Interview requested
Patriots ILB Coach Jerod Mayo – interview on Friday
Oklahoma HC Lincoln Riley – interest not reciprocated (?)
Bills OC Brian Daboll – Interest
Panthers OC Joe Brady – Interviewed
Ohio State HC Ryan Brady – Interest
Buccaneers DC Todd Bowles – Interview requested
Chiefs QB Coach Mike Kafka/ OC Eric Bieniemy – Interest delayed post playoffs
Eagles Asst. Head Coach Duce Staley

The Eagles still have plenty of interviews to conduct and candidates to discover. The list seems to be ever-growing as the front office continue their due diligence and it’s not like there’s a shortage of appealing candidates.

The next most-accomplished would probably be Bucs DC Todd Bowles, with any interest in Eric Biemiemy and Mike Kafka having to be put on hold for the time being.

Joe Brady has already interviewed and is one of the few to do so. He may well be the most attractive candidate on the offensive side of the ball, but like Saleh, left the NovaCare Complex without a contract. He could interview a second time, but has drawn interest around the league, with Atlanta being among the front-runners to land him.

Keep your eyes peeled and buckle your seatbelts Eagles fans, it’s going to be a rollercoaster weekend.
