The Eagles had one vacant spot on their 53-man roster, but no more. Tight End Richard Rodgers has been signed by the team, making this his third stint in Philadelphia in as many years.
On paper, Rodgers was disappointing in his first season as an Eagle, mainly because he spent the majority of the season sidelined due to an injury. In fact, he played in just 3% of offensive snaps. However, if healthy, the Eagles offense could’ve looked a little different.
Rodgers was subsequently released but then signed again in late March. He’s appeared in 8 total games for the Eagles, but injuries have been his downfall and often pushed Joshua Perkins into the spotlight.
Formerly of the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers, if healthy, will be a great insurance policy behind Goedert and Ertz as someone who has knowledge of the system, the coaching staff, and of course his new teammates. It’s a logical fit from every angle.
What’s really interesting here is that Rodgers was recently cut by the Washington football team. It’s not the first time the Eagles have done this, and not even the first time they’ve done so with Washington. Nate Sudfeld was poached from their practice squad before the opening game of the season.
That’s not to say that Rodgers has all the cheat codes to a revamped Washington offense, but without preseason tape, any knowledge here is absolutely invaluable.
The Eagles couldn’t really afford to go into week one with just two tight ends on the roster. This move makes a lot of sense.
