The Eagles made an interesting roster move on Tuesday, placing Brandon Brooks on the PUP list and signing a tight end in his place.

The Tight End in question

Enter Caleb Wilson. Selected with the final pick in last year’s NFL Draft by the Arizona Cardinals, Mr Irrelevant is very relevant today.

Wilson played his College ball at UCLA after joining as a walk-on tight end. In his junior season, he smashed single-season franchise records, amassing 965 receiving yards, leading all TE’s in catches and yards per game.

At 6’4, 235 lbs, Wilson ran a blazing 4.59 40-yard dash, but his speed wasn’t enough to see him crack the Cardinals roster. Wilson did seem relatively consistent in preseason and outperformed names like Ricky Seals-Jones, prompting the Cards to sign him the practice squad before Washington poached him in December. He was waived yesterday and it didn’t take the Eagles long to snipe their man off the market.

Wilson will dive into the team’s intriguing TE3 battle.

After refusing to take a tight end in this year’s draft, the team were quick to pull the trigger on signing former Oregon State product Noah Togiai. With Joshua Perkins also in the equation, this battle will be a fun one to watch. Theoretically, the Eagles could use the extra depth at tight end and there’s no harm exploring a prolific collegiate receiving option as a potential developmental candidate – just ask Trey Burton.

It will be very intriguing to see how Wilson fares in Camp, especially with no preseason to showcase his talents.
