According to Mike Kaye of NJ.com, Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Rasul Douglas has agreed to a contract restructure.

On the surface, this is already interesting as Douglas was entering the final year of his rookie deal where he was set to make a little over $2.1M. He spent most of the offseason being shopped around, but may ultimately stay in Philadelphia.

This restructure isn’t an extension, so it’s likely that Douglas has agreed to take a pay-cut in order to help the team. However, the Eagles still have around $22M in cap space, it’s not like they’re in dire need of an extra boost.

Douglas was always bound to be fighting for his future this offseason, but with the Eagles revamping the secondary from the top-down and not drafting another young cornerback, there is a glimmer of hope for the West Virginia product.

Douglas started six games last year in wake of injured starters compiling 35 tackles. This came on the back of a 2018 season where he had a team-leading 3 interceptions.

It’s a murky future that now sees Douglas lose leverage with the Eagles no longer being bound financially to him. Sidney Jones, his draftmate, has had a much more turbulent time but has received votes of confidence after a late resurgence.

The move may be a bid to try and force his way back in the conversation against cheaper competition. Trevor Williams, for instance, signed a one-year deal worth $935,000. If Douglas can make sure the decision isn’t about money, he at least has a chance to cling on…but can he do so?
