Just one day removed from an emotional win over the Packers, the Eagles announced the signing of veteran cornerback Orlando Scandrick. This is a move that made plenty of sense given the lack of depth now facing the secondary.
Avonte Maddox was involved in a scary collision with Andrew Sendejo last night that saw him stretchered off the field and while initial reports have been positive, making sure Maddox makes a full recovery from the horrible hit is absolutely pivotal.
Adding insult to injury is the fact that Sidney Jones also went down with injury last night. If you take into account that Ronald Darby and Jalen Mills are already sidelined, the positional depth looks bleak. Rasul Douglas and Craig James were the only healthy Eagles corners leaving Lambeau.
Scandrick was among the best remaining free agent corners and spent time in Philadelphia this offseason. With a resume of nickel experience, the 5’10, corner spent last year with the Chiefs, playing in 15 games and starting 7, tallying a career-high 13 passes defensed. Drafted by the Cowboys in 2008, Scandrick was a key contributor in the Dallas secondary for nine years, before an offseason stint with the Redskins and the aforementioned resurgence in Kansas City.
In a pinch, Scandrick is certainly a serviceable corner and will presumably fill-in for Maddox in the slot while he recovers. The question is, will there be an upgrade over Craig James? If so, who?
Linebacker L.J Fort was waived in a corresponding roster move.
