Ranking every regular season hype video released by the Eagles

Every year, the Philadelphia Eagles release a hype video just days before the regular season. It’s something that fans now dearly look forward to. But the question I found myself asking every year is ‘will it somehow be better than last year’s?

The team do such a great job with these videos, I went back and watched every single one to find out which season truly had the best hype video. Of course, these rankings are subjective, but I’d love to hear your favorite and why in the comments below!

Honorary mentions: 2017 playoff hype

If these were regular-season hype videos, they would be #1 and #2 in my mind.

The music, the narration, the emotion in this video are all so intense it makes you want to run through a wall. Maybe it’s because we know the underdog emotions attached, that raw anger and hunger, the belief in this team when nobody else had it. This video does a tremendous job of encapsulating that adrenaline-filled mood and amplifying it ten-fold.

I’ve watched this video countless times. It’s such a great concept and it’s pieced together beautifully. As far as editing goes, this is just excellent on every level. I went and downloaded this song on Apple Music (Inertia – Lincoln Jaeger, you’re welcome) because of how it made me feel. The criticism in the background to clips of the team overcoming those referenced obstacles, ending in OTA’s and a Doug Pederson speech. This is among my favorite Eagles hype videos of all time because of the dreaminess. It’s like re-watching a fairytale moment in your life. Only the most memorable bits stick out, but they’re so precious.

Okay, onto the rankings.

7: 2014 – Everything and more

Speedacity. Not a word? It is now. Look, I know Eagles fans resent the Chip Kelly era, but when this video dropped following a first-season playoff berth under his guidance, it was exhilarating. This video has everything. Quick cuts, references that have stood the test of time like ‘Ertz so good’, slick editing, and some sassy humor. The video ramps up in tempo toward the end before an abrupt slow down that does seem to drag a litttleee too long. It doesn’t set a consistent mood like the others and that’s the only reason it’s lower on this list.

6: 2018 – This is only the beginning

A hype video following the incredible 2017 season has to be gold, right? The narration is intense and that backing track just hits you. HARD. As soon as you hear ‘It was us vs everyone and every single time, we just gave more’. it’s on. The Meek reference was cool, but I feel like as soon as it hits, the video just relaxes. Perhaps the suspense of that long note set the bar too high, but it’s like the video slowly brings you back down, despite trying its upmost to keep lifting. Started out great, ended softly, it’s middle of the order for me.

5: 2017 – Are you interested?

This is a cool video. Considering this was the video that preceded the Super Bowl run, it’s even more so. It does a great job of touching on community aspects of the city, as again, bringing a relatable narration that fits the entire Philadelphia mantra. It sets the underdog sentiment nicely with the ‘thumbtack’ piece and overall, nothing really to critique here. Solid.

4: 2016 – Every Fall, We Rise

We’re back to the sass. A dig at Chip Kelly? Yes, please. Relatable narration that brings the whole city together? Yes, please. The stock sound effects are overused, but Jeffery Lurie making a cameo and Merril Reese joining him? It makes for a great uplifting video before the season, but it doesn’t make me want to obliterate a brick wall with my bare hands.

3: 2019 – Let’s fly

A slow build-up with single Piano notes is always a good way to start. The ‘feelin good’ song choice was a strong one, but there’s too much product placement here. The Bose headphones and shirt that conveniently went on sale just after, it’s a bit…much. The fan running in the rain is cool, the DeSean Jackson quote is cooler, the highlights fit perfectly…but the problem is the videos hyping the hype video were better. Those 10-15 seconds players posted on personal profiles had me SO excited for this video and it was great and all but they’ve done better…

2: It’s time to work

I’m sorry, but anyone that doesn’t have this numbered #1 or #2 needs to take a strong look in the mirror. Brian Dawkins giving you a personal pep talk while the music theatrically builds as the players walk out of the tunnel? It still gives me goosebumps. The pacing is brilliant and I still come back to this when I need motivation myself. ‘Good is a four-letter word when you’re reaching for more’ INJECT IT INTO MY VEINS. There’s something about this video that genuinely makes me ready to give everything I’ve got that given day. And it’d be straight to #1 if not for one more masterpiece…

1: 2013 – Brotherly Love

Being in England, it’s hard to really feel part of something a million miles away. At least, it was until this video came out. Maybe this is just sentimental to me, but I still go back and watch this from time to time and get goosebumps. The narration is excellent and makes anyone watching feel welcomed with open arms into this family. ‘When it comes to the birds, it’s ALWAYS we. It’s always been we.’

The introduction to legends of the team, the idea that the one thing uniting people from all different cultures and corners of the city is something as pure as Football, creating a family bond, it’s amazing.

This video helped 15-year-old Liam to dream. And if it wasn’t for this video, I might not have even started Philly Sports Network all those years later.
