Instant analysis: Eagles make 25 roster moves ahead of Saturday’s cutdown deadline

The Eagles have announced the first 25 roster moves of what is always a very difficult weekend. There are 12 players left to be cut in order to trim the roster down to 53, but in the meantime, here’s everything you need to know.

The Eagles have confirmed the following moves:

TE Richard Rodgers placed on Injured Reserve

Waived/Injured DT Aziz Shittu

Released

DE Kasim Edebali

DE Eli Harold

LB Hayes Pullard

CB Orlando Scandrick

TE Will Tye

Waived

WR Carlton Agudosi

S Trae Elston

C Anthony Fabiano

S Deiondre’ Hall

CB Ajene Harris

CB Josh Hawkins

QB Cody Kessler

T Riley Mayfield

CB Jeremiah McKinnon

WR Marken Michel

RB Donnel Pumphrey

G Keegan Render

CB Sojourn Shelton

LB Alex Singleton

WR DeAndre Thompkins

S Jason Thompson

DT Kevin Wilkins

LB Chris Worley

Both CFL exports have been waived

Marken Michel and Alex Singleton both enjoyed stellar preseason campaigns on the back of strong training camp outings, but it wasn’t enough to push on to the back end of the depth chart. This likely means Greg Ward Jr/Mack Hollins will push on for a WR5/6 role, and T.J Edwards has the potential to stick to the team at the linebacker position.

It’s a real shame to see both players waived, but one thing is for certain: It won’t take them long to find another home.

Tight end notes

With Richard Rodgers placed on IR, expect the Eagles to keep Joshua Perkins and/or Alex Ellis. The latter has definitely made the most waves this preseason, but Perkins has familiarity with the team. TE depth is thin behind Ertz and Goedert, so expect at least one of those names to stick.

Cre’Von to IR?

Don’t write it off. CB Orlando Scandrick was waived earlier today and the team can bring him back after week 2. LeBlanc has to be on the active roster in order to be placed on injured reserve, so don’t be surprised if he comes back to the Eagles as a backup nickel corner.

The end of troubled eras

Gone are Donnel Pumphrey and QB Cody Kessler (no word on Thorson yet). Two very different stories that ultimately share the same ending. Kessler will probably find a new team sooner than Pumphrey, who is one of the most underwhelming draft selections in recent memory.

The next step

With 12 moves to make, there are some very interesting players left on the fringe:

RB Wendell Smallwood

OL Nate Herbig

LB T.J Edwards

QB Clayton Thorson

WR Greg Ward Jr

OT Brett Toth

to name but a few. The Eagles have some very difficult decisions to make over the next 24 hours and your best bet to keep up to date is using our live-tracker below!

  1. With some moaning going on around town about the fairness(?) of Hollins taking a spot over Ward, those last few spots on the roster HAVE to be held by guys who are strong special teams contributors. That part of the game is just too important.

In reality, I hope that Doug allows Fipp significant input on a few of those bottom of the roster guys.
