Game recap: New York Empire topple the Freedoms & ruin undefeated Home record

Philadelphia: The long grind of World Team Tennis came down to its final day of the regular season as the Philadelphia Freedoms took on the New York Empire. The Empire had everything on the line if they wanted to make the playoffs while the Freedoms had the number 1 seed secured and were looking for an undefeated season at home. The freedoms would take down New York last night to make things interesting.

The Order of the Matches were as follows:
Men’s Doubles
Men’s Singles
Mixed Doubles
Women’s Doubles
Women’s Singles

The Empire would come out throwing big shots, taking the first Two sets which were Men’s Singles & Men’s Doubles. The first set ended 5-1 and New York would come from behind and steal the second, 5-4, in a Tiebreaker after the Freedoms surrendered a 4-2 lead.

The Empire took third set 5-3 which was Mixed Doubles and lead 15-8.

This would be the second time this season that the Freedoms have lost three sets in a row, the last time was on July 23 when they fell to Orange County Breakers.

In the Fourth set, the Freedoms won dominantly in Women’s Doubles, going down 16-13 heading into the final set.

Kirsten Flipkens took down Taylor Townsend 5-3 as New York Empire would defeat the Freedoms 21-16 & in the process the Empire would punch their ticket to the Playoffs for the first time.

The Moment that sent New York to the Playoffs:

This was the first time that the Freedoms have lost at home, First time at home they lost 3 straight sets

The World Team Tennis Playoffs will be on August 2nd & 3rd from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas and the playoffs will be LIVE on CBS Sports Network.
