“Why not win the Cup?” Says New Philadelphia Union Striker Andrew Wooten

WOOT

The Philadelphia Union signed German-American striker Andrew Wooten last night. The Club unveiled his arrival at the live Men in Blazer’s Podcast at the Theater of the Living Arts in front of the Son’s of Ben and other Union/soccer fans. Wooten was asked what he’s dreaming of achieving with the Union; his response, “I want to score as many goals as I can, and hope that we can get a lot of wins, and why not win the Cup?!”

Philadelphia’s newest Signing won’t be completed until the Transfer Window opens on July 9th, so the Union’s newest striker won’t see the field until mid-July. However, that did not stop him from dreaming about glory in Philly. Wooten has a point to prove, he scored 17 goals last season with SV Sandhausen in the second division in Germany. The 29-year-old striker want’s to do great things in Philly and make it back to the USMNT!

Since Wooten cannot officially join the Union until July 9th, he’ll have a few weeks he has a chance to get acclimated to a new country, get some rest as his 2.Bundesliga campaign ended just over a month ago, and he’ll be raring to go when he can play his first match.

Wooten brings goals, and much needed striker depth to this Union squad. The addition of Wooten means the Union now have five strikers on their roster, but it also means that Sergio Santos and Kacper Przybylko won’t have to be relied on so heavily to score goals once Philly reaches those dog-days-of-summer.

The Union Aren’t Messing Around This Season:

The Union are on the down-swing of the Gold Cup break, and get back to MLS action Wednesday July 26th. They are in first place in the East after the first half of the season, and this move shows that Ernst Tanner and the Union squad want to be there come the end of September.

Wooten’s addition coupled with Jamiro Monteiro’s loan being picked up for the rest of the season make this team one of the more complete sides in MLS. If Philly can get Marco Fabián back to full strength and have Wooten bag some goals for this team in the later stages of the season, then this side looks poised for a playoff run!

A Show for the Occasion:

The Union announced their newest signing in style. They had the ever-popular, most crap-tastic, soccer podcasting duo that are the Men in Blazers announce the singing at their live show in Philadelphia. This was a cool gesture.

Rog and Davo spoke about the USWNT dominance in the World Cup, and about the USMNT efforts to show they are still a relevant soccer talking point as they compete in the Gold Cup. They then transitioned to speak with Union captain Alejandro Bedoya about the USMNT and the Philadelphia Union’s great start tot the first half of the season, and finished things off by unveiling and interviewing Andrew Wooten; closing the show with a rendition of the chant “No one likes us” by the Son’s of Ben. If you’re interested in giving it a listen, here’s the Pod:

The Future Looks Bright:

With the MLS season entering its second half, the Union look poised to continue their strong run of form. The addition of Andrew Wooten should do nothing but help this team continue their push for a title!
