Former Saint Joseph’s Coach Phil Martelli to Michigan

Philadelphia: As the saying goes, when one door closes, another one opens up and that is what has taken place with Phil Martelli.

On Monday, reports came out that former Saint Joseph’s Head Coach Phil Martelli has accepted a position as Assistant Coach at University of Michigan under new Head Coach Juwan Howard

The University of Michigan is getting a good coach to be an assistant coach for a 1st-time head coach Juwan Howard. During his 24 years as Head coach at Saint Joseph’s, Martelli leads the Hawks to the NCAA Tournament 7 times, 6 trips to the NIT Tournament, 444 coaching wins. 3 Atlantic 10 Conference championships. Martelli was the 2004 AP & Naismith Coach of the Year  Coach of the Year. Martelli was named Atlantic 10 Conference Coach of the year 4 times.

Martelli lead the Saint Joseph’s Hawks to the Elite 8 in 2004 where they fell to Oklahoma State, that team was led by Delonte West, Jameer Nelson, Pat Caroll, Tyrone Barley

Phil Martelli final season with the Hawks, the team went 14–19 (6–12 A-10) and lost to Davidson in the Quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 Tournament at Barclays Center.  

Many college basketball fans in Philadelphia are still angry and upset over Phil Martelli being removed from Saint Joseph’s by Director of Athletics Jill Bodensteiner on March 19. You cannot go around college basketball in Philadelphia & the Big 5 (Temple, LaSalle, Penn, Villanova, Saint Joseph’s) without bringing up Phil Martelli. Coach Martelli was a key figure for Coaches vs Cancer for the Philadelphia Market.

This could be a good thing for Phil Martelli in going to Michigan, a fresh start and who knows there could be a head coaching opening for 2020 that he could consider.
