Talk about a prospect who needed a monstrous second season more than any other prospect in the WHL. Well, for Cole Moberg‘s efforts he now finds himself on the cusp of being drafted into the NHL, thus almost making his childhood dream come true. Moberg is like a well-oiled machine that uses his blazing speed to his advantage in both the offensive and defensive zones. He has been playing hockey practically since he was born, as he hails from North Vancouver, BC, CAN (or should we call it the Motherland of hockey). “It feels pretty good about possibly getting drafted, but honestly I’m just trying not to think about it that much. I’m just going about my day working out, skating, just trying not to worry about the draft that much.”

Cole Moberg is 18-years-old, and boy does he have a cannon from the point. To be quite honest, his hockey skills rank off the charts, as he stands at 6’3,” and weighs 198 pounds. Moberg is so darn explosive as he pushes the play up the ice, and he also plays such a sound defensive game. He reminds me of Philippe Myers, and Flyers fans know all too well how his career is ending up. Moberg is a ball of energy, and he never quits on a play. All in all, Moberg possesses all the tools to succeed in the NHL, and better yet he’s a right-handed defenseman.

“From the time I started playing hockey my goal was to make the NHL,” Moberg exclaims, “I can play Forward, I haven’t played Forward in a while, but I will if a team needs help I’m sure I can figure it out.” Flyers fans can remember a player like Moberg, he’s like a Sami Kapanen. He just does whatever to help his team win. You want him to play defense…no problem…you want him to play forward…no problem.

The young stud continues, “I’m an offensive defenseman I just work on getting bigger and stronger. On the ice, I love skating that’s the part of my game I focus on, that’s my best asset I believe. I like to work on my shot, and handling the puck. I love jumping up into the play, I love being up there.”

Moberg has matured into a playmaking machine and one that is a great skater. He’s always involved in the play, whether if it’s in both the offensive or defensive zones. Moberg accelerates and blows by defenders and forwards alike. Moreover, he can be physical at times, as Moberg isn’t afraid to do anything to help his team win. He has a nasty backhand, and did I mention he can flat-out skate!!!

My dad has been very influential. Growing up he’s pushed me a little. He played hockey growing up, so he’s familiar. He’s been amazing for sure.”

This young stud in Moberg was born on October 17, 2000, and this was a day a star was born. He found a passion, and a love for the sport of hockey mainly from the time he was born. Moberg has really learned the game proper way, and he takes nothing for granted.

The Prince George Cougars product in Moberg plays all three zones well. This kid can just flat out score. Maybe it’s his favorite food that helps him stay focused at the task at hand, or players he idolizes for that matter, “My favorite food is pasta…alfredo, penne alfredo, or spaghetti (Laughing). I like Drew Doughty, Erik Karlsson, or Oliver Ekman-Larsson. They are all offensive defencemen, but they are good in the defensive zone too.”

This 18-year-old young prospect knew the importance of just having fun, and building confidence for the new season. Moberg worked hard in the offseason and was able to improve his game tremendously for the 2018-19 season. In just his second season for the Cougars, he registered 13 goals, and 27 assists for a total of 40 points in 61 games played. This was tops for Cougars defencemen in points, and Moberg’s point total ranked 23rd in the WHL for defensemen. He also blasted his previous career high in points set in 2017-18 with 11 for the Cougars. Moberg just looked more at ease, and more confident with his role this past season.

The Cougars product in Moberg is a player that possesses a quick release. Moberg hits the net accurately, and he has transformed himself into quite a steal for an NHL team. He could very well be a hidden gem of this years draft, and his effort and dedication for the sport of hockey have led him to the cusp of being drafted into the NHL. Moberg is currently ranked #136 by NHL Central Scouting, so maybe he falls to the Flyers in rounds 5-7. He leaves us with this unique message:

I love jumping up into the play. Hopefully, I can put up some points. I want to lead the team to some victories, and hopefully win the Cup.”
