It’s been revealed that Phillies centerfielder Odubel Herrera was arrested on Monday night following a report of a domestic violence incident. Herrera and his 20-year-old girlfriend were at the Golden Nugget Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City when the incident took place, per the Police report.

The police report also states that his Herrera’s girlfriend “had visible signs of injury to her arms and neck that were sustained after being assaulted by her boyfriend during a dispute”

The severity of this incident does not need explaining. But he will face discipline from the MLB’s domestic abuse policy and would almost certainly be placed on the league’s restricted list if he’s suspended.

Although the 27-year old is in the third year of a $30M contract, the Phillies have club options for the next two seasons. This goes without saying, but keeping Herrera around send the absolute wrong message to not only other players in the team and league, but the millions of fans who watch around the country.

The Phillies should absolutely be prepared to part ways with Herrera and cannot afford to let this kind of incident tarnish the reputation of the team. Domestic violence should never be tolerated, regardless of who the perpetrator may be or what status they hold. If the allegations are true, the Phillies have to swing the just sword.
